CHAPTER 5

THE LAW OF MIR ACLES

NOT ONLY IS the secret kingdom the law for us to follow to be blessed on this earth, but it is also a guide to the miraculous. In Mark 11 we have an exchange between Jesus and His disciples. In it is the formula for the miraculous in our lives.

According to the story, as Jesus and His disciples were leaving Bethany and Jesus was hungry, He saw a fig tree in full leaf and went to it seeking a couple of figs to satisfy His appetite. He reached up and found that its fruitfulness was an illusion.1 As we continue the story, we find that it is clear that the fig tree stood for Israel, which, with its magnificent ceremonies and richly garbed priests, was holding out to worshippers the promise of salvation. When the worshippers reached for true spiritual nourishment, they came up with disappointment and disillusionment. In fact, they were even cheated of their money by money changers that were outside the door of the temple, because only temple currency was allowed as offerings by the worshippers.

Nevertheless Jesus looked at the fig tree and said, “Let no one eat fruit from you ever again.”2 They passed by the fig tree, descended the Mount of Olives, and then entered the temple grounds in Jerusalem. That evening they returned to Bethany to spend the night, and on the next morning, they headed from Bethany back to Jerusalem. On the way, they passed by the little fig tree, and to the amazement of the disciples, the little tree had withered from the roots.

Peter shouted in amazement, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree which You cursed has withered away.”3 Obviously Peter wasn’t wasting his breath saying something that was evident to all of them. What he was essentially saying was, “Lord, how did You do it? Tell us the secret of such a wonderful miracle.” Jesus replied, “Have faith in God.”4 This is the key to all miracles. “Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”5

The Bible tells us that “faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”6 It also tells us that a double-minded man can receive nothing from the Lord.7 If a person is to receive a miracle, he or she must be absolutely convinced of the power of God, of the goodness of God, and of the ability of God to do what He promised.
